The paperless office used to be common of those high concepts everybody talked about, half in geeky boastfulness, half in fun always in reference to a somewhat distant tomorrow. A separated and ambitious idea, it was right up there with robot butler (think of umbrageous Allen's "Sleeper,") Big Brother biometrics, and a Star Wars missile defense theory

At the time, a dramatic leap into productivity appeared good news for banks in such a manner dependent on deposit slips, large client files, and paper checks to earn work done. It still does.
